Apple Adds “Time to Walk” to Apple Watch, Fitness+

Posted January 25, 2021 | Apple | Apple Fitness+ | Apple Watch | Cloud | Windows

With the launch of Fitness+ in late 2020, Apple has really started to differentiate Apple Watch from other smartwatches. The addition of a new “Time to Walk” feature is, ahem, another step in the right direction.

“Even throughout this challenging period of time, one activity that has remained available to many is walking,” Apple senior director Jay Blahnik says in a canned statement. “With Time to Walk, we’re bringing weekly original content to Apple Watch in Fitness+ that includes some of the most diverse, fascinating, and celebrated guests offering inspiration and entertainment to help our users keep moving through the power of walking.”

Fitness trackers and smartwatches have had walk reminders for years now, of course. But Time to Walk is a bit different in that it is an “audio walking experience”—on Apple Watch for Fitness+ subscribers—that includes podcast-like episodes in which you can pretend to be walking with “influential and interesting people as they share thoughtful and meaningful stories, photos, and music” while enjoying photos and other images on the Apple Watch face.

There are four episodes available at launch that feature country music star Dolly Parton, NBA player Draymond Green, musician Shawn Mendes, and Emmy Award winner Uzo Aduba. And Apple says that new episodes will appear in the Workout app on Apple Watch from a different guest each Monday through the end of April.
