Apple will hold its annual WWDC developer conference on June 5-9, the company announced today. Once again, the event will be virtual and free for everyone, but there will also be a special event at the Apple Park for the opening keynote on June 5.

“WWDC is one of our favorite times of the year at Apple because it’s an opportunity to connect with the talented developers from around the globe who make this community so extraordinary,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. “WWDC23 is going to be our biggest and most exciting yet, and we can’t wait to see many of you online and in person at this very special event!”

Apple usually unveils major updates for its software platforms at WWDC, and we should see iOS 17, iPadOS17, macOS 14, and watchOS 10 this year. However, the highlight of the show may be the presentation of Apple’s first mixed-reality headset, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Apple’s new headset is expected to be named “Reality Pro,” and the company is said to have been working on it since 2015. The headset is expected to feature an M2 chip, 4K displays, and various sensors to track eye and hand movements. According to Gurman, the headset will also require an external battery, but it “probably” won’t require an iPhone.

If you’re not interested in Apple’s upcoming headset, the upcoming iOS 17 update is also expected to bring some significant changes: First of all, Apple could finally allow third-party browsers to use their own rendering engine instead of WebKit, which is something that both Mozilla and Google have been preparing for. Moreover, the EU’s Digital Markets Act will require Apple to allow third-party app stores in Europe starting next year, and iOS 17 could lay the groundwork for that to happen.
