Apple to Launch New 3D System on iPads, iPhones
Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a new 3D system on its mobile hardware. The company has been working on a new 3D system for several years that will be key to its upcoming AR headsets and AR glasses.
Bloomberg reports that Apple is planning to introduce the new 3D system first on a new iPad Pro as early as the first half of 2020, and it will essentially be a more advanced version of Face ID.
The new 3D system will feature two camera sensors and a small hole for the 3D system on the new iPad Pro. It will allow users to create 3D reconstructions of their rooms, objects, and people. It’s not clear exactly how the new 3D system will be used for the AR headsets or glasses.
Apple plans to later bring the 3D system to iPhones near the end of 2020, which are also expected to feature 5G capabilities.
Cupertino has around 1,000 engineers working on its AR and VR plans, and it’s even working on a new operating system for its AR devices called rOS internally. The new 3D sensor system is expected to “underpin” the company’s range of new AR and VR devices, which aren’t expected to arrive till 2022.
