Apple Working on In-Display Fingerprint Scanner for 2020 iPhones
Apple’s 2019 iPhones are coming out next week. And ahead of the release of Apple’s next iPhones, there are some new details on Apple’s plans for the iPhones coming out next year.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on putting an in-display fingerprint scanner on the 2020 iPhones. Earlier reports did suggest Apple will be putting in-display fingerprint scanners on iPhones in 2021, though.
The in-display fingerprint scanner will allow users to unlock their phone with their finger by putting Touch ID into the display. In-display fingerprint scanners are obviously nothing new, with many Android manufacturers making phones with in-display fingerprint scanners nowadays.
Apple will, however, continue to keep Face ID along with Touch ID on the 2020 iPhones. That means Apple might be the first company to offer both 3D-sensing face recognition and a fingerprint scanner on a phone at the same time. And if both Face ID and Touch ID work together all the time, it could make unlocking your iPhone way easier and faster than before. You could, for example, use Touch ID when you wake up, and use Face ID for things like making payments at a store, etc.
Touch ID is also making a return with Apple’s rumored low-cost iPhone SE successor, expected to arrive in early 2020.
Apple is still testing the in-display fingerprint scanner for the 2020 iPhones, but there’s a chance it could not arrive till 2021 if the testing process doesn’t proceed as expected.
There’s already been a lot of rumors about the 2020 iPhones, by the way. Cupertino is expected to put 5G on the 2020 iPhones, as well as rear-facing 3D cameras on the back, and a faster processor.
