Apple will open up pre-orders for its redesigned 13.6-inch MacBook Air on Friday, with the first devices shipping on July 15. This will be the second MacBook model to use Apple’s new M2 chip following the release of the 2022 13.3” MacBook Pro last month.

“Supercharged by the M2 chip, the all-new MacBook Air features even more performance and a new strikingly thin design, a larger 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, a four-speaker sound system, up to 18 hours of battery life, and MagSafe charging,” Apple announced today.

The design of this new 13.6-inch Macbook Air takes some inspiration from the 14” and 16” MacBook Pro models Apple released last year, with similar rounded corners and camera notch. However, this new MacBook Air still has a fanless design, and it also brings back the beloved MagSafe charging port that will keep the two Thunderbolt ports free.

Under the hood, Apple’s new M2 chip comes with a more powerful 8-core CPU and an up to 10-core GPU. The chip also supports 100GB/s of unified memory bandwidth and up to 24GB of unified memory. This new MacBook Air also includes a four-speaker sound system, a three-mic array, and a new 1080p FaceTime HD camera.

Apple’s M2 MacBook Air starts at $1,199 in the US ($1,099 for education) and it will be available in midnight, starlight, silver, and space gray finishes. According to recent reports, a 15-inch MacBook Air is also in the works and could be released next year, though it may come with a next-gen Apple M3 chip instead of the just-released M2.
