Call of Duty: Warzone is Coming to Mobile
Activision is working on a mobile version of Call of Duty: Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale version of the blockbuster franchise. The company has started hiring developers to work on this mobile version of Warzone, which will be designed with “cutting-edge technology”
The Call of Duty publisher already has a free-to-play mobile game with Call of Duty: Mobile, but this new version of Call of Duty: Warzone sounds much more ambitious. “We are creating an all-new, AAA mobile experience that will bring the thrilling, fluid and large-scale action of Call of Duty®: Warzone to players on the go,” Activision said in the announcement.

Activision embraced the battle royale genre a little late. Call of Duty: Warzone was released in March 2020 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, at a time where games like PUBG, Fortnite, or Apex Legends already had massive communities. Still, the game’s solid gameplay and the strength of the Call of Duty brand quickly made it a blockbuster success: Activision announced back in April 2021 that Warzone had already crossed 100 million players.
After Activision admitted that Call of Duty: Vanguard saw disappointing sales, Call of Duty: Warzone is slowly but surely starting to become the flagship Call of Duty experience for the company. Last month, Activision also announced that Infinity Ward, the developer of this year’s Call of Duty episode (a sequel to the 2019 Modern Warfare game) was also working on a new Warzone experience coming later this year on PC and consoles. The project will use a brand new game engine, but it’s not clear yet if the mobile version of Warzone will also be using some of these technologies.
