Google Announces Pixel 7A, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet

Posted May 10, 2023 | Android | Google | Google Pixel | Mobile | Pixel 7a | Pixel Fold | Pixel Tablet | Windows

As expected, Google wrapped up the introducing keynote for its I/O developer conference today with new Pixel devices. The company took the wraps of the Pixel 7a, the Pixel tablet, and the Pixel Fold, and the latter was probably the main highlight of these Pixel announcements.

If Google’s Pixel phones deserve credit for their excellent camera quality, their design often leaves something to be desired. However, the Pixel Fold is probably the first Pixel device to scream premium quality, and at $1800, it’s also the most expensive Pixel phone ever. The Pixel 7a, however, should continue to provide great features at an affordable price point.

Pixel 7a

Google’s latest A-series Pixel phone is available for purchase today at $499, and it includes many features found on Google’s Premium Pixel phones such as Face Unlock and wireless charging (a first for an A-series Pixel phone). The Pixel 7a also comes with the same Tensor G2 that powers the Pixel 7 Pro, and it also features Google’s Titan M2 security chip.

“Pixel 7a has the same familiar design as Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, with its iconic Pixel camera bar and smooth, sculpted surfaces. Featuring an all-new midframe architecture, Pixel 7a is our most durable A-series yet,” Google said today.

The Pixel 7a features a 6.1” 1080×2400 OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a dual rear camera system with a 64MP wide camera and a 13MP ultra-wide camera, plus a 13 MP camera on the front. You can also expect 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 4300 mAh battery that can last up to 72 hours with the Extreme Battery Saver mode.

Thanks to its Tensor G2 chip, the Pixel 7a supports AI-powered features such as Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur in Google Photos. It also supports Pixel Speech features such as Live Translate, Recorder Speaker Labels, Assistant Voice Typing, and Voice Messaging Transcription on the Messages app.

The Pixel 7a can be purchased on the Google Store today, and Google is offering free Pixel Buds A-Series and a limited-edition phone case with all purchases.

Pixel Tablet

We’ve first seen the Pixel tablet at Google’s I/O 2022 conference last year, then the company teased it again at its Pixel 7 launch event back in October. Today, Google is opening pre-orders for the 11-inch tablet and it starts at $499, just like the new Pixel 7a.

Google’s Pixel tablet features an 11-inch 2560×1600 LCD screen, a Google Tensor G2 chip with a Titan M2 security coprocessor, 8GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of storage. There are also two 8 MP cameras on the back and the front of the tablet that support AI-powered features such as Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur.

The Pixel tablet comes with a Charging Speaker Dock that can turn the tablet into a smart home controller or digital photo frame, similar to Google’s Nest Hub smart screens. The Pixel tablet is also the first Android tablet with built-in Google Cast functionality, which will allow users to cast music and videos when it’s in Hub mode.

Google says that over 50 Google apps are optimized for the Pixel tablet, and the company also made sure that third-party apps like Spotify and Disney are optimized for tablet use. Google claims that the speakers on the Charging Speaker Dock have “four times the bass than the Pixel Tablet alone.”

The Pixel tablet is available for pre-order starting today in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Japan, and Australia. It will start shipping next month on June 20.

Pixel Fold

The Pixel Fold is Google’s first foldable device, and it’s also the most premium Pixel device the company ever created. At $1,799, it competes directly with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 from Samsung, which is probably the company that invested the most into foldable phones.

“To create this foldable design, we didn’t compromise on form and function. Many of the Pixel components — from camera, battery, speakers and haptics technology — were cleverly redesigned to fit within the thin design. Our custom-built hinge not only contributes to that thinness, but also doubles as the most durable hinge out there,” Google said today.

The Pixel Fold features a 5.8-inch OLED FHD+ exterior screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, plus a 7.6-inch internal foldable OLED 120Hz screen. According to Google, this screen has “a thinner profile than any other foldable phone in the market.”

Just as Microsoft did on its Surface Duo, Google did optimize Android to make apps take full advantage of the two screens, but users will also be able to use two apps side by side. A dynamic taskbar at the bottom of the screen will let users easily switch between apps or drag a compatible app into split-screen mode.

The Pixel Fold comes with the same Tensor G2 and Titan M2 chips as the Pixel 7a and Pixel tablet, but it features 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. Google also promises the best cameras ever seen on a foldable phone with a triple rear camera system that includes a 10.8 MP ultrawide lens, a main 48 MP lens, and a 5x folded telephoto lens. There’s also a 9.5 MP camera on the exterior screen, plus an 8 MP inner camera.

The Pixel Fold is now available for pre-order in the US, the UK, Germany, and Japan, and it will start shipping on June 27. If you’re in the US, Google is offering a free Pixel Watch ($349 value) with every purchase for a limited time.
