Google Chrome Introduces Memory Saver and Energy Saver Modes

Posted December 8, 2022 | Cloud | Google Chrome | Web browsers | Windows

Google is adding new Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes to the desktop version of Google Chrome. The new modes are rolling out on Chrome version 108 on Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS.

With Memory Saver, Chrome users will be able to free up memory from inactive tabs to make currently used tabs in use more responsive. Similar to Microsoft Edge’s Sleeping Tabs feature, inactive tabs will refresh when you start using them again.

Google Chrome’s Energy Saver mode is also quite similar to Microsoft Edge’s Efficiency mode. When turned on, the feature will minimize power usage by putting restrictions on background tabs and visual effects on websites. On laptops, the feature can be automatically turned on when your battery level drops to 20%.

Chrome users will find granular settings to never put some websites to sleep and more. Just like Edge, Chrome used to be a very lean browser that evolved into a resource-hungry app over the years. Google claims that these two new performance settings can make Chrome use up to 30% less memory, so this is definitely a step in the right direction.
