Google Fi Now Encrypts Cellular Data Traffic for Pixel Users

Posted October 12, 2022 | Android | Cloud | Google | Google Fi | Google Pixel | Mobile | Windows

Google today announced even deeper integration between its Pixel smartphone lineup and its Google Fi mobile carrier service.

“Every day, our teams help protect your personal information, working to ensure all Google products are secure by default, private by design, and put you in control of your data,” Google’s Karthik Lakshminarayanan explains. “That’s why all Google Fi phone plans come with privacy and security features at no extra cost. And today we’re sharing an update that makes it even easier to protect your personal information online when browsing.”

That update is a mobile connection with end-to-end encryption: Pixel 4-7 users with Android 12 or higher who are also Google Fi customers are now automatically protected with encrypted cellular network traffic. Google already offers an optional VPN through Fi that works with all handsets and can encrypt network traffic over Wi-Fi too. Both features prevent websites from using your IP address to track your location.

You can learn more about this new feature from a Google report and the Google Fi Help Center.
