Google Fit is Improved on Android, iOS

Posted August 4, 2019 | Android | Google Fit | iOS | Mobile | Windows

Google Fit is picking up sleep app integration and dark theme support on Android and iOS, and route mapping on iOS.

“At Google Fit, we understand that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is more than just tracking what you do on the go,” Google’s Defne Gurel announced. “It’s also about resting up and powering down. So today, we’re bringing improved sleep insights and dark theme to our Google Fit app.”

Here’s what’s new.

Improved sleep insights. Google Fit doesn’t natively track your sleep—which makes sense, it’s a phone app—but it can now connect to sleep-tracking apps and track your sleep quality over time alongside your other health and fitness data. “You’ll also be able to add, edit or access your sleep history through the journal,” Gurel adds.

Dark theme support. Ahead of Dark mode coming to Android Q and iOS 13, Google Fit can now be manually configured to use a dark theme. I assume this will become optionally automatic when the new OS versions are released.

Route mapping for runs, hikes, and bike rides (iOS). Already available in Android, iOS users can now view maps of their run, hike, and bike routes. This feature requires you to be using Wear OS by Google smartwatch, Apple Watch, or other connected apps that provide this data.

You can download Google Fit for Android from the Google Play Store and for iPhone/iPad from the Apple Apps Store.
