Google Photos Now Lets You Tag Faces Manually, but There’s a Catch

Posted November 27, 2019 | Android | Google | Google Photos | ML | Windows

Google is rolling out a new feature for Google Photos users and it’s something a lot of people have been waiting for. Just like most modern photo storage platforms, Google uses machine learning to detect faces and people in your photos, and automatically tag them.

However, Google Photos didn’t allow users to manually tag someone in a picture, even when the app couldn’t correctly recognize a face on a picture or failed to identify a person correctly.

That’s finally changing now, reports Android Police. Google is rolling out a new update to the Google Photos app that enables manual face tagging, but there’s a big catch.

Unless Google’s algorithms detect a face in a picture, you won’t be able to manually tag that face. So yes, the tagging feature still heavily relies on Google actually being able to detect faces in pictures, which–algorithmically speaking–wouldn’t be too difficult for a company like Google. But considering that machine learning can still be a hit and miss, this is still an annoying limitation on Google’s part.
