Google Releases Android 11 Developer Preview 3

Posted April 23, 2020 | Android | Android 11 | Dev | Windows

Google today announced the availability of Android 11 Developer Preview 3, the final pre-release version aimed solely at developers.

“This update includes bug fixes and a set of productivity improvements for developers,” Google vice president Dave Burke explains in the announcement post. “Today’s release is for developers and not intended for daily or consumer use … If you’re already running a Developer Preview build, you’ll receive an over-the-air (OTA) update to today’s release soon.”

A few of the bigger changes in this third developer preview include:

Update to app exit reasons. Android 11 helps app developers understand why an app exited, and this API has been updated based on feedback.

ADB incremental. Now, installing large Android Packages (APKs) from your development PC to a USB-connected device is up to 10 times faster than before. (In DP3, ADB Incremental only works with Pixel 4 and 4 XL handsets.)

Wireless debugging. Now you can pair your development device wirelessly and never need to involve any cables.

Additionally, Google says that it will soon finalize the API set for Android 11 and recommends that developers release Android 11-compatible versions of their apps in time for next month’s beta so they can be tested on a wide range of devices. System behaviors, non-SDK greylists, and APIs will be finalized before the platform stability period in June/July.
