Google Services to Provide Clearer Information to EU Users

Posted January 27, 2023 | Cloud | Europe | Google | Windows

The European Commission announced this week that Google has committed to giving consumers clearer and more accurate information on several of its services in the European Union. To comply with new EU rules, Google will make changes to its Google Store, Google Play Store, Google Hotels, and Google Flights services.

“Even today, almost three years after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, we see an increasing number of consumers turn to the internet to book their holidays, make purchases, or consult a review,” explained Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders. “EU consumers are entitled to clear, complete information so that they can make informed choices. The commitments made by Google are a step forward in this direction.”

For its Google Flight and Google Hotels services, Google has agreed to make more clear to EU users if they are contracting directly with Google or if the company is just acting as an intermediary for other companies. Google will also need to better indicate that user reviews aren’t verified on Google Hotels and display reference prices for discounts seen by EU consumers.

As for the Google Store, Google will need to provide better information on delivery costs, right of withdrawal, and availability of repair or replacement options for all products. Moreover, Google will need to better inform consumers on how to contact the company.

The changes to the Google Play Store will allow users to access different country versions of the digital storefront and use payment from any EU country. “We call on Google to comply fully with the Geo-blocking Regulation, ensuring that consumers can enjoy the same rights and access the same content, wherever they are in the EU,” said Reynders.

Google has yet to announce when all these changes to its services will be implemented in the European Union. Earlier this week, the company also announced that it was rolling out support for alternative billing systems for Android apps and games in India to comply with new local laws.
