Google Won’t Launch Pixel 4 in India Due

Posted October 17, 2019 | Android | Google | Hardware | Motion Sense | Pixel 4 | Pixel 4 XL | Windows

Google launched the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL on Tuesday, and one of the highlight features of the new Pixel devices is Motion Sense. Google made a miniature version of its radar-based Soli sensor that allows users to interact with the phone without actually touching it.

But the new sensor is preventing Google from bringing the devices to India. According to a report from TechCrunch, Google won’t be launching the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in India due to the Motion Sense hardware.

Google’s Soli sensor uses the 60GHz mmWave frequency band, and Google was unable to get approval from Indian authorities to use the frequency band, meaning it’s legally not allowed to sell any product that uses the frequency band.

“Google has a wide range of products that we make available in different regions around the world. We determine availability based on a variety of factors, including local trends, and product features. We decided not to make Pixel 4 available in India. We remain committed to our current Pixel phones and look forward to bringing future Pixel devices to India,” a Google spokesperson said.

Google also won’t make Motion Sense available in Japan till spring 2020.

It’s unlikely Google’s Pixel business will be affected due to the Pixel 4 not launching in India, since the Pixel phones were never really popular in developing countries where people tend to prefer more affordable devices like the ones from OnePlus and Xiaomi.
