Intel’s Pentium and Celeron Brands Are Being Replaced by “Intel Processor”

Posted September 16, 2022 | Hardware | Intel | Windows

Intel announced today that its Celeron and Pentium brands for entry-levels PCs will soon be replaced by a new “Intel Processor” brand. This new brand will cover multiple processor families coming to entry-level laptops in 2023.

In the announcement, the chip maker explained that the new Intel Processor brand will “simplify the product purchase experience for consumers.” Moreover, the company says that it will “continue to deliver the same products and benefits within segments.”

The Pentium and Celeron brands have been around for over 20 years. The Pentium brand used to designate Intel’s flagship processors until it was displaced by the Core line of CPUs, which are now used in most PCs purchased by consumers and businesses.

In recent years, Intel’s Pentium processors have remained slightly more premium than the low-end Celeron series, though the brand pretty much lost all of its appeal a long time ago. The entry-level Surface Go 3 that Microsoft launched a year ago still uses an Intel Pentium processor, but most consumers should probably opt for the model with a faster Intel Core i3 CPU.

“With this new, streamlined brand architecture, Intel will continue to sharpen its focus on its flagship brands:  Intel Core, Intel Evo, and Intel vPro,” Intel said today. The company actually leaked details about its 13th-gen Core processors earlier this week, but an official announcement is likely coming during the Intel Innovation event on September 27-28.
