Microsoft announced today that it has finalized the development of Windows 10 version 20H2 and will release it in October if all goes well. Current Windows 10 users will upgrade to this version by installing the Windows 10 October 2020 Update, the firm says.

“Today, we are releasing [Windows 10 Insider Preview] build 19042.508 (KB4571756) to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel,” the latest Windows Insider blog post reads. “We believe that Build 19042.508 is the final build and still plan on continuing to improve the overall experience of [Windows 10 Version 20H2] on customers’ PCs as part of our normal servicing cadence.”

Microsoft’s “servicing cadence”—seriously—has been anything but normal for at least the past two years. But the current schedule, which matches that of last year, is that the October 2020 Update will be delivered as a small quality update if you already have Windows 10 version 2004. Otherwise, you’ll get the full feature update treatment.

For those that want the final bits today, Microsoft notes that Windows 10 Version 20H2 will be offered to Insiders in the Release Preview Channel via its so-called “seeker” experience in Windows Update at first. This simply means that you’ll have to check for updates and then choose to install it. “Once an Insider updates their PC [with] the October 2020 Update [to Windows 10 version 20H2], they will continue to automatically receive new servicing updates through Windows Update (like the [normal] monthly update process),” the firm adds.

Finally, there’s also one known issue: Those who use Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) will see an “Element not found” error when they try to start WSL. A fix will be provided in the next Windows 10 version 20H2 servicing release “shortly,” Microsoft says.
