Microsoft has confirmed that it has halted the manufacture of all current-generation Xbox consoles models except for the Xbox One S.

“As we ramp up into the future with Xbox Series X, we’re taking the natural step of stopping production on Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. “Xbox One S will continue to be manufactured and sold globally.”

Microsoft launched the original Xbox One in November 2013 with a focus on 1080p video gaming, digital content, and Blu-Ray-based video. The Xbox One S debuted in 2016, offering a svelter and white form factor—you may recall I once referred to it as “the perfect thing”—and, more important, gaming upscaling from 1080p to 4K, 4K digital video and Blu-Ray playback, and HDR support.

In August 2017, Microsoft retired the original Xbox One and then unleashed the Xbox One X, which for the first time provided gaming in 4K. The final Xbox One model, called the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, arrived in April 2019 and was essentially an Xbox One S minus the Blu-Ray disc drive.

With this week’s retirement of the Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, only the platform’s most popular model, the Xbox One S, is still being made. And perhaps Microsoft plans to keep it in the market, at least for the short term, as a low-cost alternative to the Xbox Series X.

Also possible: Microsoft is rumored to be making a lower-cost version of the Xbox Series X that might be called the Xbox Series S, and that could take the place of the Xbox One S at the low-end of the Xbox lineup over time.
