Microsoft is Still Committed to HoloLens 2 and Mixed Reality Despite Recent Layoffs

Posted February 3, 2023 | HoloLens 2 | Microsoft HoloLens | mixed reality | Mobile | Windows

Microsoft is trying to set things straights about its HoloLens business after the 10,000 job cuts the company announced last month have reportedly hit the mixed reality group pretty hard. Robin Seiler, CVP of Windows & Devices at Microsoft penned a blog post yesterday to “provide clarity” on the company’s commitment to HoloLens 2 and Mixed Reality.

“We continue to produce and support HoloLens 2, inclusive of monthly software updates to ensure our enterprise customers can leverage HoloLens 2 and the supporting platform to complete critical work. We also continue to update Dynamics 365 Guides and Remote Assist to address the needs of those customers,” Seiler wrote.

The exec also addressed the development of the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) program, which has hit some hurdles after the US Congress announced that it wouldn’t let the US army buy more custom HoloLens headsets this year. “We recently contracted with the U.S. Army to revise the IVAS product design to address soldier feedback, a testament to our partnership with the government, commitment to the program, and ability to rapidly iterate on product designs to achieve results,” the exec said.

While Microsoft is still supporting its HoloLens 2 headset that was initially released back in November 2019, there’s currently no upgraded version in sight. Scott Evans, Microsoft’s vice president of Mixed Reality said last fall that if the company ever releases a successor to the HoloLens 2, it would need to be a “meaningful update.”

Seiler also commented on the future of the Mixed Reality Toolkit (MRTK), a Microsoft-driven project allowing developers to develop cross-platform mixed reality apps. For now, the MRTK will continue to live on as an open-source project. “Microsoft is committed to maintaining compatibility between MRTK and HoloLens 2, including through continued open-source contributions to MRTK when needed to ensure developers using MRTK can continue to build for and deploy to HoloLens 2,” Seiler explained.

Lastly, the exec shared an update on Microsoft Mesh, which is Microsoft’s new vision for the metaverse after the company made the “difficult decision to shut down its social VR platform AltSpaceVR. “We are currently in preview with enterprise early adopters who are providing feedback as we iterate on experiences and offerings,” wrote the CVP of Windows & Devices.
