Microsoft Now Lets You Hide the Bing Button in Edge

Posted March 25, 2023 | AI | Artificial Intelligence | Bing Chatbot | Microsoft Edge | Windows

Microsoft has quietly issued an updated version of Edge 111 that lets you hide the ugly new Bing toolbar button. Assuming, that is, you know where to look.

As you may recall, Microsoft issued Edge version 111 in mid-March on its normal four-week release cycle. The most obvious new feature—it’s impossible to miss—is a new AI-powered Copilot feature that’s announced by a non-removable giant blue Bing button on the toolbar. This unattractive—and, for many, unwanted—addition was greeted poorly by the user base, but Microsoft said that it would enable controls to remove it from Edge … in Edge version 113, due in May. For this reason, guides like my own Tip: Remove the Bing Button from Microsoft Edge 111 came to the aid of those in need.

Well, Microsoft has apparently heard your complaints. Well, not your complaints, but certainly those from its enterprise customer base. And it has issued a new build of Edge version 111 that lets anyone remove the Bing button. (Business customers can disable this feature across their organizations using policy.)

To do so, first upgrade Edge to the latest version in Edge settings > About Microsoft Edge. Then, open Edge settings and navigate to Sidebar > App and notification settings > Discover. Disable the first option there, “Show Discover.”
