Microsoft Releases First Windows 11 Insider Builds for the New Canary and Dev Channels

Posted March 8, 2023 | Windows | Windows 11 | Windows Insider

Microsoft has just released today the Windows 11 Insider build 25314 and 23403 for Insiders in the new Canary and Dev channels. Microsoft announced the new Canary channel earlier this week alongside a “reboot” of the Dev channel, and Insiders who were previously on the Dev Channel will be automatically moved to the Canary channel.

The new Canary Channel now receives 25000 series builds while the rebooted Dev Channel receives 23000 series builds. Until now, Dev Channel Insiders were testing 25000 series builds, and since you can’t install builds with a lower number, you’ll need to do a clean install to move from the Canary Channel to the new Dev Channel. However, Insiders in the Beta Channel or the Release Preview channel can join the Dev Channel or Canary Channel without any issues.

These two new builds for Canary and Dev channel testers bring new access key shortcuts in File Explorer as well as other features that aren’t exactly new. Let’s start with what’s new for the Canary Channel.

What’s new in the Windows 11 Insider build 25314

The Windows 11 insider build 25314 build introduces access key shortcuts in the context menu in File Explorer, which makes it easier to cut, copy, share, or delete content. Each access key has a dedicated letter, and you can surface them by clicking on the menu key on your keyboard. However, Microsoft notes that these access keys are currently rolling out to a subset of Insiders.

The Windows 11 Insider build 25314 will also turn on Local Security Authority (LSA) protection automatically on devices that support it. This feature can help to protect users’ credentials by preventing unauthorized code from running in the LSA process. However, the feature will only be turned on automatically if Windows 11 doesn’t detect incompatibilities with LSA protection on your device.

This build also introduces File Recommendations in File Explorer on devices where users are signed in with an Azure AD account. This new feature will only roll out to a subset of Insiders on the Canary channel.

What’s new in the Windows 11 build 23403

Today’s Windows 11 build 23403 for the rebooted Dev Channel brings the same access keys in File Explorer we’ve previously detailed for the build 25314, as well as the new File Recommendations in File Explorer. These two features are also only rolling out to a subset of Insiders on the Dev channel.

However, there are also other new features that Microsoft had been previously testing in the Dev Channel on 25000 series builds (before that channel was rebooted). That’s the case for the additional languages supported for live captions, the VPN status icon in the taskbar, and the new copy button for quickly copying 2FA codes received in notifications.

The Windows 11 Insider build 23403 also makes the search box in the taskbar slightly lighter when Windows is set to a custom color mode. This improvement is also included in the “Moment 2” update that was released in preview last week.

That’s it for the main new features in these two fresh builds. Microsoft previously said that it would release new builds for the Canary channel more frequently, though the company will only publish detailed release notes when new features are available, which was the case today.
