If you’ve been struggling to find a new Surface Duo 2 at the Microsoft Store or other retailers, you’re not alone. Stocks for the dual-screen device released in October 2021 appear to be drying up, though Microsoft is saying it’s still committed to the form factor.

In a statement shared with Windows Central, Microsoft didn’t confirm if it was still manufacturing new Surface Duo 2 units, but the company said that it was aware of supply issues. What isn’t clear is if the company is actually doing something about it.

“We are aware supply is currently falling short of demand in several markets. While we do not have inventory information to share at present, Surface Duo remains an important part of the Surface portfolio,” a Microsoft spokesperson said.

The Surface Duo 2 and the original Surface Duo obviously weren’t blockbuster successes for the company, even though the second-gen model addressed many of the shortcomings of the company’s first dual-screen phone. The Surface Duo 2 came with a much better camera and more polished software, and both devices are now running Android 12L, a version of Android that includes optimizations for dual-screen devices.

According to Windows Central’s sources, a 3rd gen Surface Duo is currently in development, but plans could change. Just like Apple, Microsoft slowly iterates, and the company also isn’t afraid to cancel products that don’t sell very well. As you may remember, Microsoft even put back its dual-screen Surface Neo laptop on the shelf just a couple of months after showing it to the public.
