Microsoft Teams for Linux is Now Available in Preview

Posted December 10, 2019 | Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Teams | Office 365 | Windows

Microsoft announced today that a preview version of Teams for Linux is now available in in .deb and .rpm formats.

“Microsoft has announced this morning that Teams will be available to Linux users in public preview, demonstrating the company’s effort to support mixed environments across its cloud and productivity offerings,” a Microsoft representative told me. “The Microsoft Teams client is the first Office app that is coming to Linux desktops, and will support all of Team’s core capabilities.”

So why even bring Teams to Linux? My guess is that it’s to support developers who need to communicate and collaborate with other types of workers in mixed environments.

Or as Microsoft puts it, “our customers have devices running on a variety of different platforms such as Windows 10, Linux and others. We are committed to supporting mixed environments across our cloud and productivity offerings … And it’ also an exciting opportunity for developers who have built apps for Teams to be able to grow their reach to this new set of users.”

You can download the native Linux packages in .deb and .rpm formats here.
