TomTom announced today that its navigation technology has been integrated into Microsoft’s Connected Vehicle Platform. The move is an expansion of the partnership the two firms announced in February.

“Our integration with the Microsoft Connected Vehicle Platform means that automakers can get access to precise and reliable navigation and driving behavior data easily, while of course adhering to privacy principles,” TomTom chief product officer Cees van Dok said in a prepared statement. “This data could, for instance, be used to predict the range of an electric vehicle based on driving behavior and planned route more accurately; or to work out, based on navigation behavior, what connectivity package for online navigation would be best suited for a driver. This is a game-changer.”

Under terms of the deal, TomTom navigation usage and diagnostics data can be sent from compatible vehicles to Microsoft Azure where the data can be used by automakers to “generate data-driven insights to deliver tailored services and to make better-informed design and engineering decisions.” The location intelligence includes traffic information and HD map services, and it can also be used in vehicles for navigation apps, and for context while driving autonomously.

TomTom first made its location-based services available on Microsoft Azure in December 2016. In February 2019, TomTom and Microsoft announced that TomTom was chosen as the location data provider for mapping services across Microsoft’s solutions, including Azure Maps, Bing, Cortana, and Windows.

Microsoft’s Connected Vehicle Platform currently serves as the underpinnings for connected vehicles from Volkswagen and Renault Nissan Mitsubishi.
