Minecraft Launches on Chromebooks in Early Access

Posted March 15, 2023 | Chrome OS | Chromebook | Games | Gaming | Minecraft | Mobile | Windows

Minecraft is launching in early access on select Chromebooks today. The best-selling video game of all time is coming to Chrome OS via the Google Play Store, which now lets Chromebook users download Android apps and games.

If Minecraft for Education was already available on Chromebooks, that wasn’t the case for the regular Minecraft game. Developer Mojang Studios launched a trial version of Minecraft on Chrome OS last month that was restricted to 90 minutes of gameplay, but the new early access version launching today includes the full game: That means crossplay support, access to the Minecraft Marketplace, Realms, and more.

The Chromebook version of Minecraft, which is priced at $19.99, is separate from the Android version of the game that’s priced at $7.49. If you already own the latter, you can upgrade to the Chromebook version for just $12.50.

Be aware that you won’t be able to purchase Minecraft on your Chromebook if your device doesn’t need the minimum requirements, which include 4 CPU cores 4GB of RAM, and Chrome OS 111. “We don’t have a confirmed release date for the full version of Minecraft for Chromebook yet, but once it’s officially released, everyone with a compatible Chromebook will be able to download it from the Google Play Store,” Mojang Studios said today.
