Report: Microsoft is Exploring How to Bring Ads to its Bing AI

Posted February 17, 2023 | Bing | Bing + MSN | Cloud | Microsoft | Microsoft Consumer Services | Windows

Microsoft has reportedly been discussing how to monetize its new Bing chatbot with advertisers. According to Reuters, Microsoft has demoed its new AI-powered Bing to a “major ad agency” this week, and the company explained during a meeting how it plans to integrate paid links within Bing’s responses.

An ad executive who spoke to Reuters about the meeting said that Microsoft is already testing ads on its Bing chatbot. “The company said it is taking traditional search ads, in which brands pay to have their websites or products appear on search results for keywords related to their business, and inserting them into responses generated by the Bing chatbot, the ad executive said.”

According to the same ad executive that spoke with Reuters on the condition of anonymity, Microsoft is also working on another ad format tailored for specific industries. “For example, when a user asks the new AI-powered Bing “what are the best hotels in Mexico?”, hotel ads could pop up, according to the ad executive.”

When Microsoft introduced its new AI-powered Bing last week, the company announced straight away that this could open up new possibilities for advertisers. “With deeply personalized experiences we expect to be able to deliver even more relevant messages to consumers, with the goal of improved ROI for advertisers. And as usage expands, we expect to see greater volume leading to more opportunities for advertisers to reach their desired customers,” said Rob Wilk, CVP of Microsoft Advertising.

While there’s already clear enthusiasm for ChatGPT and the new Bing chatbot, these new AI-powered tools are also far from perfect. Microsoft acknowledged this week that its AI-powered Bing can go off the rails after users ask it 15 or more questions. Speaking with The New York Times, Kevin Scott, Microsoft’s chief technology officer, said that Microsoft was considering adding a limit to conversation length to prevent these issues.
