Samsung Galaxy S10 camera gets native QR code scanning in new software update

Posted June 24, 2019 | Mobile | News

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you need to scan a QR code, only to realize that you don’t have a special app installed on your phone? Downloading it on the spot wouldn’t be that big of a hassle, but do you really need yet another app just to scan a QR code? The answer is no, you don’t. The functionality should be built into the camera app itself and seamlessly work when you point your phone at a QR code.

With the June security update to One UI, Samsung is introducing native QR code scanning to the camera app on the Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e. The feature was previously available in Bixby Vision (and still is), but with the latest update, it can now be used within the Samsung stock camera app. All you need to do is point your phone at a QR code and it will automatically pick up on it. If you feel like disabling this feature for whatever reason, there’s a new toggle in Camera settings called “Scan QR codes”.
The update also introduces a QR code scanner toggle in the notification shade, SamMobile reports, though it seems to just be an alternative way to initiate the camera app. Still, for those who didn’t know about the new feature, the QR code scanner toggle could serve as a helpful hint.

The June security patch has started rolling out on both the Exynos and Snapdragon versions of the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e. The international versions have started receiving the update in Switzerland earlier today, while other regions will be treated to it in the coming days.
