Sony announced during a webcast yesterday (via VGC) that it has sold around 600K units of its PlayStation VR2 headset during its first six weeks on the market. The company pointed out that its original PSVR sold 8% fewer units during the same timeframe.

Sony launched its PSVR 2 headset on February 22 with a $549.99 price, which is $50 more expensive than a PlayStation 5 console in the US. Even though the headset received good reviews, it’s still not an easy sell considering that the original PSVR launched at a $399 price back in October 2016.

At launch, Sony’s PlayStation VR2 was only available to purchase from the company’s website. However, the headset is finally becoming available at other retailers, which should help sales going forward.

Sony sold over 5 million units of its original PSVR headset during its lifetime, and it will be interesting to see if the PSVR2 can beat that now that Sony has resolved PlayStation 5 supply issues. Sony sold a “record high” 6.3 million PS5 units in the past quarter, and the company expects to sell a record 25 million consoles during its current fiscal year.

Sony deserves credit for pushing VR on consoles, something that the Xbox team continues to ignore. However, if VR technology is certainly more mature than it was when the original PSVR launched, Sony’s PSVR2 still requires a wired connection to a PlayStation 5 console, which is something many console gamers may find cumbersome.

In the webcast, Sony also teased the release of upcoming PSVR2 games including Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord and a VR port of the critically-acclaimed Resident Evil 4 Remake. Later today at 1 PM PDT, the company will hold its PlayStation Showcase where new PS5 and PSVR2 games are expected to be revealed.
