Source Code for Windows NT 3.5, OG Xbox Has Allegedly Leaked
According to reports, the source code for Windows NT 3.5 and the original generation Xbox video game console have leaked.
“We’re aware of these reports and are investigating,” a Microsoft statement tersely explains.
The Verge claims that it can “confirm” that the leaked Xbox OS code is genuine.
Both systems are based on the legacy NT codebase. Windows NT 3.5 appeared in September 1994 and was the first major upgrade to NT (the first version of which was 3.1 to align it with the DOS-based version of Windows). The Xbox OS, meanwhile, was based on Windows 2000, which was originally named Windows NT 5.0.
This isn’t the first time that Windows source code has leaked, and Microsoft has long allowed governments to inspect the source code for all supported Windows versions, desktop and client, to ensure that there are no backdoors or other vulnerabilities.
