Microsoft has started rolling out new firmware updates for the original Surface Duo and the AMD-based Surface Laptop 3. The Surface Duo 2 has already received its March 2022 update last week, while Intel-based Surface Laptop 3 models received new firmware updates in the first week of March.

If this month’s Surface Duo 2 update only brought security fixes for the dual-screen device, the new bits for the original Surface Duo should also improve “device stability.” The Surface Duo received a more substantial update last month with the new Your Phone “Apps” feature that lets users run Android apps on their PC without mirroring their screen.

For Surface Laptop 3 models with AMD processors, this month’s firmware updates should improve system stability, graphics stability and performance, as well as support for Microsoft’s Surface Dock 2. Moreover, Microsoft mentioned that this update enables a new feature to improve battery life on devices running Windows 11.

The Surface Laptop 3 was the first Surface device to offer the choice between Intel and AMD processors, and Microsoft has stuck to this formula with the Surface Laptop 4 released back in Spring 2021. This product line is likely to get refreshed later this year, especially after started shipping its first 12th gen Core mobile CPUs. Taking inspiration from ARM chips, these new Intel CPUs use a new hybrid architecture that should offer optimal power and efficiency.
