Turning Off Your Lights With Google Home Is Less Annoying Now

Posted July 24, 2019 | Google | Google Assistant | Google Home | Windows

Google is rolling out a change to its Google Home and Nest Hub devices that introduces a much-needed change. Google Home users have long been complaining about the way the Assistant works with light commands, and Google is finally making it so the feature is less annoying.

In the past, when you asked the Assistant to dim the lights or turn them off, it will respond with something like “Ok, turning off 2 lights”. And that can be a little annoying when you are about to sleep.

The company even joked about the functionality:

Anyone who has a Google Home and smart lights knows the drill:

You, about to fall asleep: “Ok Google, turn off the bedroom lights”.

Google Home responds, a bit louder than you’d like: “Ok, turning off 2 lights”.

You, now wide awake, but at least the lights are off.

Well, we heard you, and we listened.

And so, the new update makes the Assistant only makes a confirmation chime that is a whole lot less annoying than the voice confirmation. Google says the change will work for switches and plugs that are identified as lights, too — so all you need to do is put something like “lamp” or “lights” on the name of the devices for Assistant to make the confirmation chime instead of the voice confirmation when you are controlling them with voice commands.

The feature is rolling out to all users now, so it could take a little while before its available for everyone.
