Twitter Blue Will Reportedly Cost $11 on Apple’s App Store
Twitter is reportedly planning to change the pricing for its Twitter Blue subscription on the iOS App Store and the web. The Information is reporting that Twitter will raise the price of Twitter Blue to $11 on the App Store to compensate for the 30% cut Apple takes on in-app purchases. For Twitter users who want to subscribe to Twitter Blue on the web, the company will reportedly drop the cost of the subscription from $8/month to $7.
Relaunching Twitter Blue was one of Elon Musk’s first big projects as the new CEO of Twitter. The new Twitter Blue provided all subscribers with a verified badge, but Twitter quickly realized that people were abusing the system to impersonate others, and the rollout was paused last month.
As Twitter is planning to revamp its Blue subscription once again to add new colored badges for brands and governments, Elon Musk also made it clear that he wants subscriptions to account for half of the company’s revenue in the future. Before Elon Musk acquired the company, Twitter Blue originally launched at $2.99 in select markets. The subscription got a first price increase to $4.99 in July, a couple of months before Elon Musk acquired the company.
Last week, Musk criticized Apple in a series of tweets and pointed out the “secret 30% tax on everything you buy through their App Store.” The Twitter CEO later had a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook on Apple’s campus, but the two execs apparently didn’t entirely resolve their differences.
If Twitter does go forward with its plan to make Twitter Blue cost $11 on the App Store, Apple still has strict rules preventing app developers to redirect users to their website to avoid the Apple tax on in-app purchases. There’s still no ETA for the relaunch of Twitter Blue, and we also don’t know yet what the pricing will be on the Google Play Store where Google also takes a 30% cut on in-app purchases.
