Anyone with a compatible PC who manually checks Windows Update will now be offered the Windows 10 version 1909 upgrade, a Microsoft support document notes. That represents a slight escalation of the previous strategy for so-called “seekers,” and suggests that most 1909 upgrade blocks have now been resolved.

“As of January 21, 2019, Windows 10 version 1909 is available for any user on a recent version of Windows 10 who manually selects ‘Check for updates’ via Windows Update [in a supported version of Windows 10],” the Microsoft support document reads.

But there’s a bigger change as well: With this shift in status, those on Windows 10 version 1809, the version that came out a year before Windows 10 version 1909, will now be more aggressively pushed to upgrade as well. That is, the upgrade will now be initiated automatically.

“We are starting the next phase in our controlled approach to automatically initiate a feature update for an increased number of devices running … Windows 10, version 1809 Home and Pro editions, keeping those devices supported and receiving the monthly updates that are critical to device security and ecosystem health,” the support document continues. “Our rollout process starts several months in advance of the end of service date to provide adequate time for a smooth update process.”

Though Windows 10 version 1909 was released just two months ago, neither of these are particularly impressive milestones since this release is not a real feature update. Instead, it’s just a normal monthly cumulative update that’s been rebranded to seem more impressive. That said, the release is notable for resetting the support lifecycle clock, so it’s still a good idea to upgrade as soon as possible since there’s little chance of something going wrong.
