Windows 11 Version 22H2 to Get File Explorer Tabs and More New Features in October

Posted September 20, 2022 | File Explorer | Windows | Windows 11

Windows 11 version 22H2, the first major update for the OS has started rolling out today on eligible devices. This update brings various new features including Snap Layouts improvements, Auto HDR for games, and more. However, the much-anticipated File Explorer tabs will start rolling out in October alongside other new features.

As you may remember, Windows 11 received a pretty significant update back in February that brought a preview of Android apps and the Windows Subsystem for Android, as well as clock and date information to the taskbar on external monitors. In recent months, Microsoft also used its monthly Patch Tuesday updates to introduce new features such as Search Highlights and Windows Spotlight wallpapers.

“As we shared back in February, you’ll see us release new features into Windows 11 more frequently in addition to our annual update,” explained Panos Panay, EVP and Chief Product Officer, Windows and Devices. “We do this by leveraging the variety of update mechanisms we have in place including servicing, and Microsoft Store updates,” the exec added.

Here are the new experiences Microsoft plans to introduce on Windows 11 in October:

File Explorer improvements: Tabs are finally coming to File Explorer, and the new homepage will also provide access to favorite, recent files, and personalized suggestions based on your Microsoft 365 account.

Redesigned Photos app: The Windows 11 Photos app is getting a new gallery view that makes it easier to browse and manage photos, including uploading them to OneDrive. A new “Memories” experience will also highlight impactful moments

Taskbar Overflow: Windows 11 is getting a new overflow menu that will allow users to view all their overflowed apps in one place.

Suggested Actions on Copy: When copying phone numbers or dates, Windows 11 users will see suggested actions such as creating calendar events or making a calll in Teams or Skype.

Share to more devices: This new experience will provide a seamless way to share content to other Windows 11 PCs using Nearby Share.

All these new Windows 11 features will start rolling out to Windows 11 users next month, though Microsoft didn’t share a specific release date today. As Panos Panay emphasized, though, Microsoft now has different ways to roll out new Windows experiences. This includes the Windows Feature Experience Pack updates that the company releases via the Microsoft Store.
