Apple is Reportedly Testing First M3 Pro Macs With 12 CPU Cores

Apple is reportedly testing its first Macs powered by an M3 Pro chip, a more powerful version of the M2 Pro chip that made its debut in the latest Mac Mini and 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros released earlier this year. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman obtained information from an App Store developer revealing details about the M3 Pro’s possible CPU and GPU configuration.

Apple’s M3 chips will mark the shift to a brand new 3nm manufacturing process. It will allow the company to fit even more CPU and GPU cores than in the existing M2 Pro chips, which include 10 CPU cores (six high-performance cores and four power-efficient cores), 16 GPU cores, and up to 32GB of unified memory.

The M3 Pro chip that Apple is currently testing includes 12 CPU cores (six high-performance cores and six power-efficient cores, 18 GPU cores, and up to 36GB of unified memory. According to Gurman, “the chip itself in this particular test is running in a future high-end MacBook Pro with the upcoming macOS 14.0 and likely is the base-level version of what will be the M3 Pro coming next year.”

Based on previous comparisons with Apple’s previous “Max” versions of its M1 and M2 chips, Gurman also speculated that a high-end M3 Max chip could include 14 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores. As a reference, the M2 Max available on the latest 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro models offers up to 12 CPU cores and up to 38 GPU cores. Apple previously described the M2 Max as “the world’s most powerful and power-efficient chip for a pro laptop.”

Gurman believes that Apple is currently working on “M3-based iMacs, high-end and low-end MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs” that could start shipping at the end of the year or early next year. The company is also expected to launch an M2-based 15-inch MacBook Air this summer, and it could be announced next month during the company’s WWDC developer conference.
