Case renders for Apple iPhone 11 Max show that Apple might have made an important decision

Posted June 25, 2019 | Mobile | News

Today, Olixar case renders for the Apple iPhone 11 Max were posted on MobileFun (via Tom’s Guide)  and reveal something that many iPhone owners hoped never to see on an iPhone again: the proprietary Lightning port. Olixar’s iPhone 11 Max case also shows that the mute switch will move up and down instead of the traditional left to right. And the case also leaves room for that controversial rear camera module.

While there has been talk that Apple would replace the proprietary Lightning port on the iPhone with a USB-C connection, there have been conflicting reports. When the tech giant made such a replacement on last year’s iPad Pro tablets, it fueled the fire even more. A couple of weeks ago, the iPhone restore screen for iOS 13 showed what appeared to be a Type-C cable plugging into a Mac. And while that certainly gave many high hopes, Apple is expected to include a Type-C to Lightning dongle in the iPhone box this year; this means that the illustration might appear when one charges his iPhone with a Mac by using the dongle and connecting the Lightning end into the iPhone and the Type-C end into the computer.

Were the iPhone 11 Max case renders made using advanced knowledge or a roll of the dice?

Besides the Lightning to Type-C dongle, Apple will reportedly toss an 18W fast charger in the box to replace the 5W brick that now comes with an iPhone. Yes, the 18W adapter is currently available, but it costs $29 at the Apple Store. Because the 2019 iPhones will supposedly feature reverse wireless charging (a feature first found on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and known as PowerShare on the Samsung Galaxy S10 series), the new units are believed to be in line for a bump in battery capacity. That’s because the battery on the host phone is used to supply the power to the device being wirelessly charged such as the AirPods carrying case, an Apple Watch, or a compatible phone. The iPhone 11 Max could end up with a battery with a capacity in the range of 3491mAh and 3650mAh. The iPhone 11 could sport a battery carrying a capacity between 3189mAh and 3322mAh while the iPhone 11R will reportedly be equipped with a 3089mAh battery. Considering that the iPhone XR has the best battery life of any iPhone ever made, the sequel should also give users a long time between charges.

The Olixar cases for the iPhone 11 Max are priced between £4.99-£9.99 ($6.36 USD-$12.72 USD at current exchange rates). What we don’t know is whether Olixar based the cases on real information from Apple or just rolled the dice. The 2019 iPhones will undoubtedly be unveiled in September (only three months away) and will feature the same 6.5-inch and 5.8-inch OLED panels for the iPhone 11 Max and iPhone 11 respectively, and a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD display for the iPhone 11R. They will be powered by the Apple-designed and TSMC built A13 SoC using the foundry’s 7nm process.

While it appears that iPhone users are stuck with using the Lightning cable for another year, the 2020 models are expected to be redesigned; as a result, we could see Apple make the switch to USB-C for its smartphones next year.
