HTC U12+ receives Android Pie in company's homeland, global rollout should follow soon enough

Posted July 2, 2019 | Mobile | News

HTC has been bleeding money for many years now, but although the company continues to release new phones (and even 5G-equipped “smart hubs”) with relative regularity, its efforts to turn the ailing business around don’t seem particularly competent or effective.

Unfortunately (and predictably enough), the over-the-air Android 9.0 delivery remains restricted to the company’s domestic market for the time being as far as both the HTC U11 and U12+ are concerned. On the bright side, we see absolutely no reason why expanding these updates around the world would take an additional few months now. Instead, you should probably expect the Pie-flavored software treats to make their way to global variants of the HTC U12+ and U11 in a matter of weeks.
After all, there are no new reports of catastrophic glitches and device bricking in Taiwan that we can find on Reddit or the company’s official regional community webpage. Oddly enough, the HTC U12+ is receiving a significantly smaller update, at 1.06GB, than the 1.4 gig or so improvement collection of the U11. It’s unclear whether that means the newer and faster high-end phone is actually missing out on anything or simply getting a leaner update with less bloatware.

For what it’s worth, the two changelogs are identical… and awfully vague, including a generic Android 9.0 Pie reference, “enhanced overall system functionality”, and the specific removal of Google+ from Blinkfeed.
