Samsung Issues Fix for Galaxy S10’s Fingerprint Scanner Issue

Posted October 24, 2019 | Android | Galaxy S10 | Hardware | Note 10 | Samsung | Security | Windows

Samsung was recently under fire over an issue that allowed anyone to unlock a Galaxy S10 or Note 10, almost bypassing the fingerprint scanner. The issue was caused by third-party screen protectors that conflict with the fingerprint recognition system, allowing almost anyone to get into your phone without needing your fingerprint.

Samsung was quick to respond to the problem, but the company blamed the issue on “unofficial, scratched, or dirty screen protectors”. The issue led to some banking apps like Bank of China pulling support for fingerprint payments from certain Samsung devices, reports Reuters.

Samsung has now issued a patch for the issue for both the Galaxy S10 and the Note 10 line, though the patch could take a little bit of time to roll out to all users. The company earlier said that the fingerprint scanner was failing because of “ultrasonic fingerprint sensors unlocking devices after recognizing 3-dimensional patterns appearing on certain silicone screen protecting cases as users’ fingerprints.”

Android Central reports that the new patch is only available for users in South Korea, meaning the majority of S10 and Note 10 owners don’t have a fix for the issue just yet.
