Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization Could Come to iPhone in 2020

Posted March 23, 2020 | Apple | iOS | Windows

Two prominent sources of Apple leaks agree that the electronics giant plans to bring sensor-shift image stabilization to iPhone this year.

The first inkling of this capability was reported in December by DigiTimes, which noted at the time that sensor-shift image stabilization would help the coming iPhones’ ultra-wide lens achieve optical image stabilization (OIS)-type functionality. Currently, only the wide-angle and telephoto lenses support OIS.

Now, this news is being confirmed by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who wrote in a research note for TF International Securities that the coming 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max would support this technology. Additionally, Kuo reports that Apple will expand to three iPhone models in 2021 and that all three will support sensor-shift image stabilization at that time.

Kuo further reports that Apple’s 2022 iPhones will include at least one model with a periscope lens and at least 5x optical zoom. Huawei has been using such a system in its high-end Android models since last year.
