Sony announced today that it has created a new PlayStation Studios Mobile division, which will focus on creating mobile games based on existing and new PlayStation IPs. The announcement was made alongside Sony’s acquisition of Savage Game Studios, a Europe-based game company created by veterans from the mobile games industry.

Back in May, Sony announced that it aimed to ship nearly 50% of its games on PC and mobile by 2025. In recent months, some of the company’s PlayStation exclusive games have made their way to PC including God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Marvel’s Spiderman. Previous reports suggested that the company could also be working on its own PC games launcher.

“Our mobile gaming efforts will be similarly additive, providing more ways for more people to engage with our content, and striving to reach new audiences unfamiliar with PlayStation and our games,” explained Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios. The exec also emphasized that Sony’s new PlayStation Studios Mobile division “will operate independently from our console development.“

Looking at the competition from Microsoft and Nintendo, bringing established game franchises to mobile devices is certainly more difficult than it seems. You may remember that Microsoft discontinued games such as Age of Empires: Castle Siege, Gears Pop!, or Minecraft Earth. Nintendo’s mobile games such as Super Mario Run or Mario Kart Tour also received a polarized reception, while Dr. Mario World was also discontinued back in November 2021.

Still, Sony and its competitors can no longer ignore the massive audience of smartphone and tablet users playing mobile games. And Sony is likely not done acquiring other studios to grow its new PlayStation mobile division. If Microsoft succeeds to acquire Activision Blizzard, the Redmond giant will become a true juggernaut in the mobile space thanks to games like Call of Duty Mobile, Candy Crush, Hearthstone, and Diablo Immortal.
